With the final games of the season gradually reducing, it was a chance for me to visit a venue I’d not been to for a couple of seasons, Florence Park, in Tiptree, home of Tiptree Jobserve whose season has been one of toil, their first team had withdrawn from Division One, leaving their Division Three team vulnerable in mid-table, today’s opposition have had a torrid season as well, sitting rock bottom were Tendring District who had actually won their last match, too little, too late as Manager, Darren Willson, bemoaned the availability of players.
On a bright but breezy afternoon, that got colder as the afternoon wore on, the referee was the experienced Stuart Franklin who was aided by Club Assistants, I thought they did good job too in a game that had seven goals and it probably should have been more.
Tendring District kicked off, lost possession as players dithered on the hard pitch, this allowed Cansell the chance to have shot, which keeper, Field saved at the expense of a corner, the corner taken by Drysdale was over-hit and the home team were more positive from the start. That positivity paid dividends when, on five minutes, a rash challenge from Green, on Cansell, saw the awarding of a penalty kick, smashed home by KIERAN OAKLEY, that’s an ominous start for the home team. Tendring District hit back, Willoughby-Burrell and Vanner-Boatman worked the ball down the left side where Vanner-Boatman saw his shot blocked by Cooper, then a cross from Willoughby-Burrell was headed wide by Morris. Leading scorer, Willoughby-Burrell then rounded Haylock and forced keeper, Longman to save, but he only parried the ball and Drysdale cleared. Willoughby-Burrell then sent a header just over the goal from a cross from Green. King found Cansell in space, but his rising shot cleared the cross bar, and the ball remained in the air for much of these opening ten minutes, rushed clearances being held up by the stiffening breeze.
When King lost the ball to Laidler he quickly regained it, found an angle for a shot from which ROSS KING despatched the ball across the face of the goal into the net and the home team were quickly two goals ahead. A shot from Gill from long range took one bounce before being fielded by keeper, Field, no pun intended, keeper, Field launched the ball down field and his opposite number, Longman, collected on the edge of his penalty area. A high ball forward from Green was chased down by Vanner-Boatmen who collided with keeper, Longman when he dived at the players feet, sustaining an injury, then a cross from Cansell was hacked clear by Green, a competitive midfielder in his first game back after suspension, keeper Longman was again in the wars when Willoughby-Burrell chased down a wide ball, although a free kick was given, the ball was there to be attacked. Owalabi fouled Laidler wide on the right side, Green took the free kick, keeper, Longman, not for the first time, fumbled the ball, with Haylock clearing the danger for a corner as Laidler threatened. The corner from Green was over hit and some of the passing was “hit-and-hope” from both teams, a fine run and cross from Owalabi was cleared by Crolla and as Tendring District built an attack, Willoughby-Burrell chased down the ball to send a looping effort towards keeper, Longman who again fumbled the ball.
Keeper, Field made a good save from wing-back, Drysdale, then Owalabi was caught off-side and the game switched ends with Utley chasing down Haylock, the forward showing determination and a bit of aggression to try to win the ball. Oakley set up Owalabi but again the offside flag was correctly waved, and the game remained end-to-end, without any real pattern of play. A curling shot from Cansell, narrowly missed the far post as the home team pressed, Gill, fouled Willoughby-Burrell, Green took the free kick, which was cleared by Haylock, once again, good defending. A corner taken by Green was cleared, Gill launched the ball forward, finding Oyadongham, who set up Cansell, who missed the target, probably the best move of the game so far. A cross from Oakley was destined for the back of the net, did Cansell handle the ball before it entered the net, if so, no goal, it remained for the Club Assistants flag to spare all blushes as Cansell, was offside. On forty-one minutes Tendring District scored, Morris started the move, Willoughby-Burrell got down the left side and from his fine pass, JASON UTLEY ran through to score, the half finished with an injury to Hunt (El) who was shunted by Oyadongham only to land inside a goal, yards off the main pitch a injure his back.
HALF-TIME: 2 – 1.
Tiptree Jobserve restarted this close match, not a classic but plenty of effort on a hard pitch and with a stiff breeze, the home team replaced Cooper with Malasa down the right flank, Oakley, once again a dangerous player if allowed to run with the ball, moved one way then the other before shooting wide with his right foot. A cross from Oyadongham hit keeper, Field, with Morris clearing, one thing I’d noticed was the respective handling of the keepers, home keeper, Longman had fumbled numerous shots whilst visiting keeper, Field, was demanding, had good distribution but needed to be more confident when catching the ball, it transpires he has only played a handful of games in that position, steep learning curve there then! Drysdale fouled Morris and from the cleared free kick, Crolla let fly from thirty yards, clearing the goal with comfort, a cross from Oyadongham was then confidently plucked out of the air by keeper, Field. King rode one tackle before going to ground after getting through a Green and Morris sandwich, he called for a foul, but the referee, well placed was unimpressed! Willoughby-Burrell again clattered into keeper, Longman who required treatment, a long ball from keeper, Longman was missed by both Green and Crolla, the ball was controlled by KIERAN OAKLEY who ran on past two more defenders before slotting the ball past keeper, Field as he advanced off his goal-line. Tiptree Jobserve should have scored again within minutes, Oyadongham ran from the half-way line beating at least three players before sending in a low driven cross which nobody could capitalise on then keeper, Field was out at the feet of Oakley who was running on to another pass from Oyadongham.
Tiptree Jobserve sensed that more goals would be forthcoming, Drysdale set off on a fine run down the left side, leaving players in his wake he proceeded to shoot at goal but hit the side netting, whereupon the home team introduced substitute Wheelans for captain, Kirwan. Morris fouled Cansell just inside the home half, Drysdale took the free kick finding Gill whose low shot took one bounce before going wide, Oakley continued to torment the visitors defence and when through on goal, only the quick movement of keeper, Field denied another goal, the keeper saving with his feet. A long ball from keeper, Field saw Willoughby-Burrell scampering through, Green, up in support recklessly tackled Malasa to earn a rebuke from the referee, who had a clear view. Oakley struck the defensive wall from a free kick twenty-five yards out, the resulting corner taken by Gill fell to Cansell whose shot was saved on the goal line by keeper, Field. On seventy minutes King was removed with Da Costaecal taking his place, that was just after the referee had cause to speak to Owalabi and Willoughby-Burrell for some “handbags” on the edge of the penalty area. Wheelans picked up the first caution of the match, when he fouled Laidler, Green took the free kick and saw his low driven shot blocked by Haylock, Tiptree Jobserve quickly moved to the other end, Oakley, who else had a rising shot at goal that cleared the crossbar.
As we entered the final fifteen minutes, Gill fouled Hunt (Et) the free kick from Green was cleared and Drysdale broke up field to find Cansell whose shot was narrowly wide of the near post, Tendring District were still looked to get a goal back, a bit of “ping-pong” from shots and blocks were made at the home end but defended stoutly and on eighty minutes the visitors changed Laidler for Hunt (A), to join two of his sons on the pitch. Tendring Borough did get a breakthrough though, Green found space down the right side and from his cross OWEN WILLOUGHBY-BURRELL scored at the far post, Tiptree Jobserve kicked off and from a left sided position, Oakley set CARTER CANSELL through, and he made no mistake from close range, the two-goal advantage had been retrieved. Morris for Tendring District limped off but eventually returned into midfield, Wheelans, already on a yellow card, dived into another rash challenge on Green, the referee had a clear view and issued a second yellow card, followed by a red, leaving the home team down to ten players. Tendring District sensed their opportunity and duly scored their third goal, Willoughby-Burrell fed the ball through to ANDREW HUNT who took the ball in his stride to squeeze the ball past the advancing keeper, Longman, what an inspired introduction that was! The visitors had a last-minute corner but Tiptree Jobserve cleared the ball and the referee brough this high scoring game to an end.
FULL TIME: 4 – 3.
This was a Division Three match, was I expecting great things, probably not, but both teams “had-a-go”, there were only seven goals but there should have been more, especially to the home team and generally the game was played in a good spirit with little dissent of note, how refreshing!
Turning to my Star Player, for me, with two goals and an assist and for being a real danger all game then Oakley for Tiptree Jobserve is that player.
