Venue: Keith Bigden Memorial Ground, Hatfield Peverel.
Where is this lovely weather coming from or more importantly how long will it last but its October and the ground is still rock hard and for my match on Saturday I travelled to The Keith Bigden Memorial Ground at Hatfield Peverel where the home team had a local derby against Tiptree Jobserve FC, with both reams languishing in the lower half of the Premier Division. However, with the main pitch “out-of-bounds” the game was played on an adjoining, slightly smaller pitch and despite a few bare patches it did not unduly affect the players, performance.
The Match Official for this game was Matthew Jarvis, a new referee for me to welcome into the ESBFL and for this game he would be assisted by Club Linesmen who did a valuable job whereas the referee to me had a sound game always being close to the action and giving clear indications of direction of free-kicks etc.
With the “Respect” handshake observed it was Hatfield Peverel who kicked off kicking towards the clubhouse and it was Tiptree Jobserve who would have defend in the early exchanges whilst looking to use the pace and guile of Malin and Tiffin in attack. In fact it was the visitors who had the first chance when Heyden played a long ball forward for Tiffin to chase and when he controlled the ball he lobbed goal-wards beating the keeper and the cross-bar. Minutes later and the same route was followed with Tiffin holding off Irvine, rounding keeper Hirst but Hale (D) had got across to cover on the six-yard line and the chance slipped by. Tiptree opted for the long ball on numerous occasions but Radley and Irvine were equal to the high ball whilst strong in the challenge on the ground. Hatfield almost benefitted from a good advantage allowed by the referee when Knight was fouled but with Walker in possession played continued until an off-side flag was raised whereupon the referee brought play back for a home free-kick. The free-kick taken by Knight saw a scramble on the six-yard line with Hale (L) striking the loose ball wide with Barden flagged for off-side. Home keeper, Hirst kept out a sharply struck shot from Malin but Hatfield were playing the more cohesive football with Hale (L) involved in most of their moves.
On ten minutes Hale (L) embarked on a rangy run from the half-way line into the penalty area, skipping through two attempted tackles on the way, again the referee allowed the game to flow. Woodcraft sent a long ball forward to Tiffin who only found Hirst with his first time shot at goal and when play switched to the other end a free-kick from Jay found the head of Radley but he just missed the target. Back in a defensive role Radley climbed all over the back of Tiffin just outside the penalty area, Irvine took the free-kick driving the ball goalwards, clipping the defensive wall with the ball striking the trailing foot of keeper Hirst and flying out for a corner. From the corner Hirst lost possession and the shot from Tiffin was deflected goalwards only for Hale (D) to once again clear off the goal-line. At the mid-half point a run down the right wing by Knight, saw him cut inside and cross with his left foot with Hale (L) rising to head goal-wards but straight into the hands of keeper, Avent. Avent, did not instil any confidence in his teams defence when he fly-hacked a clearance off the body of Hale (L) with the ball ballooning just over the unguarded goal!
Hatfield were now in the ascendency with Tiptree having to defend in numbers and once again Hale (L) was the instigator until he was fouled just past the centre-circle, missed at first by the referee with play being brought back only for Hale (L) to blast the free-kick high and wide. A long clearance from Heydon was chased down by Flatts who held the ball up until Tiffin arrived running through but fired wide of the goal with only the home keeper to beat. Malin was looking dangerous at this stage alongside Tiffin but was guilty of committing a foul on Walker on the half-way line, taken by Irvine but headed clear by Heydon to Jay then McCormack took over to find Hale (L) whose control let him down. Tiptree replaced the injured Parkin with Eveleigh, Barrett cleared as far as Leeder and Hale (L) upon receiving the ball turned to strike a low shot into the side-netting.
Jay, Hale (L) and McCormack combined in the next meaningful attack for the home team with the latter player beating three defenders before striking a rising shot that took a deflection for a corner. When Flatts beat the home defence he only had keeper, Hirst to beat, but the keeper excelled getting down to smother in the one-on-one situation, this from a good pass by Malin. Heydon for Tiptree was having a decent game in defence despite his team being under almost constant pressure until McCormack was caught marginally off-side from a cross-field ball from Hale (L) and then keeper Avent appeared to advance to catch the ball with his hands just outside the penalty area just as Barden was about to pounce and Walker tested Avent with a volley following good work again by Hale (L).
HALF-TIME: 0 – 0
Right, who is going to break this dead-lock, both teams had chances in the first half but neither side could score from mostly half-chances, so Tiptree kicked-off, lost possession to a foul allowing Jay the opportunity to drive a long free-kick straight to Avent. Lewis fouled Barden to earn a telling off from the referee but again the free-kick from Jay was over-hit. Barden made ground down the right hand side, playing the ball inside to Hale (L) with the heel of Heydon diverting the goal-bound shot for a corner. Jay took the corner, left foot, in-swinging with Barden heading high towards goal and keeper Avent taking no chances by palming the ball over for another corner-kick. The next corner, taken by McCormack found Barden who volleyed over from the far side of the six-yard box.
Hatfield took the lead on fifty-three minutes when a long driven ball out of defence found its way deep into the Tiptree half and with no defenders back keeper Avent advanced with the intention of kicking the ball back up-field but with the ball taking an age to drop from the first bounce, he tried to kick the high bouncing ball only to totally miss the ball allowing RYAN McCORMACK to run through and score the opening goal. Tiptree made a substitution with Trussler replacing Enstone after just ten minutes of the second half with Malin trying to get the better of defender Leeder and Flatts taking on Hale (D) who received a bang on the head for his troubles. Once recovered, Hale (D) made ground down the left wing finding Hale (L) whose goal-bound shot hit his own player Barden and go out for a goal-kick. Winger McCormack had been relatively quiet this half, despite his opening goal, but when given the opportunity he launched a rising shot towards the top right hand corner of the goal only for keeper, Avent to rise and tip the ball over the cross-bar but this chance again raised the impetus of Hatfield Peverel.
Walker tested Avent from a pass from Barden and Tiptree perhaps sensed that they could score with Trussler, Malin and Flatts working the ball forward but only getting a throw-in with Malin and Tiffin working hard to create any opening. On sixty-five minutes Smith limped off with Manager, Aves entering the game but it was Hale (L) who should have scored the second goal for Hatfield but despite some good build up play by Jay and Walker, Hale (L) watched his cuffed effort bobble narrowly wide. Hatfield replaced Barden and Knight with Drake and Lapwood and this immediately paid off as when Jay found Hale (L) in space on the left side he rounded a defender to cross goalwards where BRETT DRAKE scored at the near post with his first touch of the ball. Hatfield continued to dominate the attacking game with Tiptree struggling with a few knocks and having already used all three substitutes and with midfielder Hale (L) causing all sorts of problems every time he had the ball at his feet.
Hatfield defender Irvine was spoken too, this for dissent after an obvious foul on Tiffin, whose own unselfish running had produced no meaningful chances for his team but both he and Malin had received no change from the committed defensive pairing of Irvine and Radley. With fifteen minutes to go Hatfield scored their third goal, Hale (L) found RYAN McCORMACK and after he had jinxed his way past Barrett he fired low past the stranded keeper. As the second half progressed Hatfield were still quicker to the ball but on the occasion that Trussler found Tiffin it was Malin who struck a shot that cannoned back into play off the right-hand upright. Another free-kick from Jay was over-hit whilst Flatts and Trussler tried to get the ball into space for Tiffin and Malin to attack and with the game heading for closure Avent managed to stick out a long leg to stop a shot from Jay. In the last minute of the match Drake and Woodcraft had a running battle, both clutching each other’s shirts as they tried to control the ball, however as they entered the penalty area Drake fell to the ground under the close attention of Woodcraft, the referee, close by, awarded a penalty-kick. Woodcraft sounded off towards the referee who casually produced a red card to dismiss the Tiptree player for abusive language and probably did his cause no good by continuing he verbal berate the match official as he left the pitch. OK, who is going to take the penalty kick, well RYAN McCORMACK of course and he duly stroked the ball home to complete his hat-trick and complete a comprehensive victory for Hatfield Peverel FC.
FULL TIME: 4 – 0
This match was fairly even until half-time but Hatfield kept plugging away however when the Tiptree keeper made an error of judgement the home team scored and did not look back, scoring three more before full-time with McCormack claiming a hat-trick for his first goals of the season. Hatfield can move on from this match following a decent performance, whereas Tiptree Jobserve need to get some players back and regain some confidence.
For my weekly Man-of-the-Match choice I was looking for a player who had played a major part on the outcome of the match, Drake had scored with his first touch, the Hatfield Peverel defence was solid throughout, McCormack had scored a hat-trick but who else influenced the game, well as my report reads it is Lawrence Hale who was instigator in chief, always a threat with the ball and always dangerous from free-kicks and general attacking play.
