ESSEX & SUFFOLK BORDER FOOTBALL LEAGUE
DIVISION TWO & DIVISION THREE.
Date: Tuesday 7th May 2019.
Last night saw the last two remaining games of the ESBFL for season 2018/2019.
GREAT BENTLEY FC RESERVES: 1. HARWICH & PARKESTON FC RESERVES: 1.
In Division Three, on “The Green”, Great Bentley FC Reserves played out a one all draw against Harwich & Parkeston FC Reserve, and having cemented their runners-up spot last Saturday, could perhaps relax and gain more credit for the team and club to gain promotion to Division 2.
I understand that Tony Armstrong, Chairman of Harwich & Parkeston FC and ESBFL Representative Team Manager was there to award the Runners-Up Trophy.
HATFIELD PEVEREL FC RESERVES: 4. AFC SUDBURY ”A”: 4.
Venue: The Keith Bigden Ground, Hatfield Peverel.
In Division Two, Hatfield Peverel FC Reserves played AFC Sudbury “A”, the visitors sitting third in the table needed a minimum of a point to overhaul Long Melford FC Reserves to gain the runners-up spot and automatic promotion. There was also a decent crowd considering this was an evening match.
AFC had two early goals disallowed, one for off-side and one for a foul leading up to the ball going in the net and their goal-keeper almost put through his own net in a furious start. HORLOCK did open the scoring then minutes later when he was fouled, RENWICK scored from the spot and the visitors looked well placed to take all the points, however Hatfield hit back to score through FILBY before half time.
HALF-TIME: 1 – 2.
Hatfield equalised through HINDS and the game remained fairly even with chances at both ends, things changed when King replaced Horlock for AFC and he quickly set up O’MALLEY, but Hatfield would not lie down, and they equalised again through ROTARU, heading in at the far post.
The introduction of King and then Mayhew paid dividends again when KING rifled home a fine free-kick from twenty-five yards, that’s it we thought, wrong again as substitute CANSDALE equalised again for the home team.
FULL TIME: 4 – 4.
I have to say that on a hard and bumpy pitch, both teams, served up some decent football sharing eight goals, that’s entertainment perhaps, though defensively a nightmare for both managers!
So, AFC Sudbury “A” had done enough to gain the runners-up spot, albeit on goal difference, they are the ESBFL leading goal-scorers with 118 goals, and yours truly was there to hand over the Runners-Up Trophy to Lewis O’Malley whose team have now won the Tommy Thompson Cup, were beaten finalists in the Knock-Out Cup and now Division Two runners-up, all in their first season in the league.
The AFC season continues on Monday at Portman Road, when they play Old Newton United FC Reserves in the final of the Suffolk Primary Cup, a competition won last season by Bures United FC, we wish them well.
