A top-of-the-table clash took my fancy this week so a short trip to The Drift, at Dedham, was the order of the day as first placed Dedham Old Boys FC took on second placed Tiptree Jobserve FC. I had seen the visitors dismantle Wormingford Wanderers FC back in August but they looked a somewhat different outfit on Saturday but take nothing away from the home team who thoroughly deserved this emphatic victory.

 

The clubs and supporters just as the church clock struck three o’clock, held an immaculate one minutes silence in remembrance of a Tiptree Jobserve player’s late father, then exchanged the “Respect” handshake and we were ready for kick-off with match official Brian Forbes poised for this Division One game.

 

Dedham Old Boys kicked off, Moseley played the ball back to left sided wing-back, Allston whose first time left footed pass dissected the static Tiptree defence and JOHN VITELLI does what he does so well, racing through, drawing the keeper before slotting home, ten seconds gone and the home team are one goal up, quickest goal I have seen this nseason! As play resumed Welham fouled Robertson, play being brought back as no advantage fell to Tiptree, but the visitors needed to wake up quickly as Dedham looked hungry for the ball all over the park. When Clark and Robertson got in each other’s way, neither player had called to say who was going to play the ball which allowed Halsey through down the right wing but his cross fell to Fowler who had strayed marginally offside on the six yard box. Visiting skipper, Lee, was spoken too by the referee for some inappropriate language, something that has crept into the game, both nationally and locally, in grass roots football, but on open recreation grounds and within ear-shot of children’s play areas this habit must be curtailed and referees are within their rights to deal with it appropriately. It’s such a pity that the overpaid professionals, seen on television set such a poor example! Ross conceded a throw-in when Tiptree got forward through Barham and Harvey and Todd for the visitors got forward, crossing to Barham who was denied by keeper Mason who advanced to collect the long through ball. Dedham were challenging for every ball and giving Tiptree little time on the ball leading to mistakes being made and Vitelli running back to help his defence was outspoken about an off-side decision and duly received a lecture from the referee who had already exerted his authority.

On twelve minutes the pressure exerted by Dedham of Tiptree defenders led to goal number two, Lee and Robertson missed their clearance and with the ball running through to JOHN VITELLI who once again ran through to round the keeper and score goal number two. Harvey tried his luck from long range after running onto a cross from Barham after Cameron (S) had played his colleague into space on the right side, then Williamson (B) drove the ball wide after switching wings with Harvey. Tiptree had momentarily raised their game and Joyce (A) crossed towards Harvey who tried his luck with an over-head kick which flew safely wide. At the other end Peat set Moseley away only for Clark to make a timely tackle and set Robertson away down the left side but his attempt to cross the ball was poor. A cross from Joyce (A) found the head of Harvey and Lee was cautioned for his language having already been warned earlier and Dedham followed up with a corner taken by Halsey which Fowler headed goalwards with new signing Ponta catching just under the cross-bar. Fowler and Vitelli set another move going with the goal-scorer being fouled twenty-five yards out, Halsey took the free-kick with Todd clearing the ball away for Tiptree who broke away with Harvey getting onto the end of a free-kick taken by Cameron (S).

With twenty-seven minutes gone, a driven cross from Smith, for Dedham, only needed the simplest of touches as the ball flashed across goal but the next goal was only a minute away, Vitelli turned quickly just inside the penalty area where he was upended by Clark, with the referee rightly awarding a penalty kick which allowed TRISTAN MOSELEY to drive the ball home. A free kick awarded against Peat was taken by Cameron (S) but headed over the cross-bar by Williamson (B) as Joyce (A) was forced to leave the field of play with a blood injury, whilst another in-swinging free-kick taken by Robertson was palmed over the cross-bar by Dedham keeper, Mason, normally an out-field player! A quick break by Vitelli saw Halsey just fail to get his head to the driven cross and Moseley was quickest to react to the loose ball wide on the left side, crossing back into the penalty area where keeper Ponta relieved the situation. Joyce (A) rejoined the match and Williamson (B) went solo taking on the massed Dedham defence to no avail which allowed Vitelli to chase a long ball down the right wing, Clark tried to bulk his progress without success as Vitelli kept his footing to further advance to the corner of the penalty area and goal-line where Robertson cynically took him out to receive a justified caution right on half-time.

 

HALF-TIME:       3 – 0

 

Tiptree restarted the match with renewed optimism despite being three goals behind and their positive start led to Williamson (B) playing in Barham who sent a long ball to Harvey who rounded Allston only for his cross to find the keeper. Numerous niggly challenges ensued as any constructive play was stopped and a long ball forward by Tiptree found keeper Mason racing out of his penalty area to fly-kick clear with his opposite number Ponta forced to run out of his area to head clear in similar fashion. Moseley and Williamson (B) exchanged pleasantries behind the back of the unsighted referee who did speak to both players due the obvious, after the event verbal dialogue! Moseley tried a lob from outside the penalty area but his attempt dropped narrowly wide with Ponta scampering back in an attempt to save. As the home team played the better football, Vitelli was caught off-side, once again his pace got the better of him as clearly he had the legs to out-strip the frustrated Tiptree defence, and when Allston launched another long ball forward Vitelli should have increased the lead but scuffed the ball wide with only the keeper to beat.

Tiptree replaced Todd with Joyce (S) but before he had time to touch the ball Dedham increased their lead when keeper Mason launched a long ball forward, central defenders Lee and Clark failed to deal with the aerial ball and JOHN VITELLI once again ran forward to score with ease, thus completing his hat-trick. Vitelli then chased another forward ball getting past Robertson and cross to Welham who was thwarted by an excellent full-length save by keeper Ponta. With Barham now playing in defence he was guilty of two fouls on Vitelli to concede a free-kick, taken low and hard by Moseley to Vitelli who just failed to connect with an audacious back-heel at the near post and Vitelli almost turned provider when he sent Halsey away only for his low volley to strike either the boot of Robertson or the base of the upright. Tiptree replaced Clark and Joyce (A) with Williamson (S) and Parkin respectively and Dedham replaced Fowler with Marney to continue their attacking approach. Another long clearance by Mason forced Barham to head up and out for a corner, Allston fouled Williamson (B) with Peat clearing then Barham linked up with Williamson (S) to get Parkin into space but his snatched shot cleared the cross-bar.

A nice turn of pace from substitute Marney forced Ponta into a decent save and from his long clearance Harvey sent in a long cross which Mason held then Allston sent over a left wing cross which Robertson totally missed allowing Vitelli to run at goal but wastefully missing the target from close range. Mason made a fine save to deny Williamson (B) who picked up a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area before beating four players and shooting goalwards. Another long ball forward from the Dedham defence was taken in his stride despite a close call for hand-ball, by Vitelli who ran on to put the ball into the back of the net only for the club linesman to raise his flag and having initially awarded a goal the referee consulted the linesman and disallow the goal for off-side. Ponta made a fine point-blank save from his own player, Cameron (S) who had diverted a driven cross from Vitelli goalwards. As Dedham continued their attacking push, Moseley played in Vitelli, once again running through a tiring defence but this time hitting the inside of the far post with Ponta gathering the rebound. Smith for Dedham received a caution for delaying the restart after the award of a free-kick perhaps the only blot on a fine home team performance.

 

FULL TIME:         4 – 0

 

I must admit that before kick-off and given the relative league positions of these two teams, I was expecting a closer game, Tiptree Jobserve never got going at all and perhaps the quickest goal of the season by leading scorer Vitelli after only ten seconds knocked the stuffing out of the visitors! That said Dedham thoroughly deserved to win this encounter and four goals was definitely good enough and should really have been more on the chances created and spurned.

 

As for my Man-of-the-match selection, despite useful contributions by Peat, Ross, Baister, Moseley and Fowler only one player really stood out, John Vitelli of Dedham Old Boys FC, three goals and numerous other chances makes my choice relatively easy this week.
