FRINTON & WALTON FC: 0. LITTLE OAKLEY FC RESERVES: 5.
Date: Wednesday 16th December 2021. Venue: War Memorial Ground Little Oakley.
Having missed the last two Saturdays due to family commitments, I ventured out, phone, keys, wallet, and mask for this re-arranged Knock-Out Cup tie, which was hosted under the floodlights by Little Oakley FC, this a tie between Division Two, Frinton & Walton FC and Premier Division Little Oakley FC Reserves. Now, Frinton & Walton FC joined the ESBFL only last season and with an impressive showing in Division Four, nine victories out of nine matches, before the season was curtailed, they were elevated two divisions and thus far continue to do well in a strong division. For Little Oakley FC Reserves, a tough season so far, the Club has seen a number of players moving elsewhere and currently they sat thirteenth in the Premier Division.
As usual the pitch at Little Oakley FC looked in perfect condition, the referee for this evening match, a mild evening with a few more spectators then normal for an ESBFL early round cup match was Graham Pavitt, a match official I had not met before and this is his first season at ESBFL level. He would be assisted by Club Assistants, Dean Welham for Little Oakley FC Reserves and for a time Alfie Davidson, after his substitution, for Frinton & Walton FC, both of whom officiate in the ESBFL.
Frinton & Walton FC kicked-off, and Giltinane was quickly the recipient of the first foul of the match, he got up to take the free-kick himself, left-footed but wide of the goal. Little Oakley FC Reserves attacked straight away, and Davidson having played a poor back-pass to his keeper, Woods (T) conceded a corner and received an accidental arm in his face for his troubles and leading to him leaving the pitch for treatment. From the corner, taken by Green (C), keeper Woods (T) confidently punched clear to Halls and from his long forward ball Giltinane rose to flick the ball into the path of Hartley, running into the penalty area, he took a touch to round Wrycraft but in taking another touch, delayed his shot which allowed Wallace to get back to block, good defending there, but it showed the “home” team could be dangerous. Giltinane struck a shot from thirty yards which kept rising to clear the goal and at the other end, Brazitis forced a fine save from keeper Woods (T). On seven minutes Davidson re-joined the match, defender Dale had another shot saved by keeper, Woods (T), and when play switched again to the Clubhouse end, Giltinane found Chaplin-Perkins running down the right side, his pass inside ran behind defender Dale and into the path of Halls who really should have scored but crashed a fine effort against the underside of the cross-bar, the ball being cleared for a corner, another shot across the bows of the Premier side.
It took fifteen minutes for Little Oakley FC Reserves to properly settle, and it took a bit of individual skill from ROSS BRAZITIS to break the deadlock, picking up the ball after an error by Woods (S) he drove in-field across a posse of defenders before firing a fine shot that had the keeper well beaten. The Frinton & Walton FC response was immediate, Giltinane, the league’s second highest goal-scorer last season with twenty-one goals in nine matches, showed some excellent footwork to round Wrycraft and Wallace before forcing a fine save from keeper, Weller. Davidson for Frinton & Walton FC then committed a foul, when pulling back Brazitis, the referee initially awarded a penalty kick but changed his decision, after consulting the Club Assistant, to a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area, Green (C) took the free-kick but Cross headed clear. Giltinane looked a constant danger when in possession, so when he passed to Chaplin-Perkins the cross came back to Giltinane who slipped the ball to Hartley whose goal-bound shot was headed clear by Wrycraft. Play remained competitive, a few niggly fouls crept in and both sides set about creating attacks, Lonsdale managed to get a pass away, despite being fouled, a good advantage played there, to Giltinane who ran on to shoot wide of the target.
Green (T) fouled Brazitis who was running through on goal outside the penalty area, Brazitis took the free-kick himself but was thwarted by a fine save from keeper, the ball was destined for the top right-hand corner before Woods (T) tipped the ball away with a flying save. A positive run forward by Lonsdale was stopped by a solid tackle by Dale who then made an even better tackle to block a shot from Hartley who had run onto a flicked header by Giltinane. Right on half-time Little Oakley FC Reserves increased their lead, Brazitis dummied Woods (S) who ended up on the ground, the goal-bound shot was cleared off the goal-line by Green (T) but straight into the path of JAKE MAYES who hammered the ball home from close range. With only seconds remaining after this goal the half ended, Frinton & Walton FC would rightly feel they had deserved to go in at least on level terms at the break, their football and commitment had matched their higher placed opposition.
HALF-TIME: 0 – 2.
Davidson had seemingly not recovered for the second half and was replaced by Witmore for Frinton & Walton FC and Little Oakley FC kicked-off looking to consolidate their lead in what had been an even contest so far, goals scored, count, hitting the woodwork does not! That lead was extended as early as the fifth minute of the half, Lake hauled down Brazitis and captain CALUM GREEN confidently scored from the resultant penalty kick despite keeper, Woods (T) guessing the right way to dive. Dale for Little Oakley FC Reserves picked up the first caution of the match when he took out Chaplin-Perkins from behind, Halls took the free-kick and Giltinane rose to head against the cross-bar, so close once again! On fifty-five minutes Little Oakley FC Reserves replaced Brazitis with Sargent, one quick player for another but his team were indebted to keeper, Weller, when he advanced to save with his feet when Hartley got through.
On sixty minutes another player change, for Little Oakley FC Reserves, Hobson being replaced by Reid and when Frinton & Walton FC failed to clear the ball out of defence TYLER SULLIVAN scored from just on the edge of the penalty area for goal number four. When Reid broke away down the left side, Sargent failed to get a decent strike on the ball which fell to Mayes who was fouled but by adopting an aggressive stance to the aggressor was suitably cautioned. Carmichael was replaced on sixty-two minutes allowing Smith to get some action, Little Oakley FC Reserves were now suitably coasting but Frinton & Walton FC continued to press and create chances, a free-kick taken by Halls was punched clear by keeper, Weller, and a cross from Witmore was headed clear by Dale. Another corner taken by Halls found the head of Giltinane whose header was cleared off the goal-line by Green (C) the player standing at the near post. Frinton and Walton FC plugged away, keeper, Weller was forced to punch clear on two occasions and a free-kick taken by Witmore fund Giltinane whose header was straight at the keeper. The respite for Little Oakley FC Reserves came when a free-kick for a foul on Reid, taken by Green (C) flew straight to keeper, Woods (T) and Giltinane thought he should have had a free-kick when he took on Wrycraft, but nothing was given.
On seventy-seven minutes a cross from Reid fell at the feet of Sargent whose tame effort bounced to keeper, Woods (T) and from his long clearance Dale was adjudged to have fouled Chaplin-Perkins inside the penalty area, Giltinane stepped up, placing the ball low to the keepers right only to see it saved, whatever happened to just blasting the ball goal-wards! With ten minutes to play the game was stretched with players pushing forward, Reid picked up the ball inside his own half and when faced with a one-on-one with keeper, Woods (T) opted to pass to his right where Sargent failed to control allowing Cross to get back and clear the danger. Another break, this time by Green (C), should have led to a goal but Reid inexplicably placed the ball wide of the goal, the next chance for Frinton and Walton came from Lonsdale who hit a superb shot that keeper, Weller tipped over the cross-bar again at full stretch. A final goal for Little Oakley FC Reserves duly came in the dying minutes, Sargent broke away, Halls raced back to put in an excellent tackle, but Sargent retrieved and sent the ball into the penalty area where JAKE MAYES was quickest to react and rifled the ball past keeper, Woods (T), another fine goal.
FULL TIME: 0 – 5.
This was an excellent cup tie, let’s forget about the final score-line which somewhat flatters Little Oakley FC Reserves, who by playing in a higher Division would have been expected to win and on the night, they did deserve too, but the Division Two side did play some excellent attacking football that was not rewarded, playing under lights was probably a new experience as well. In the next round Little Oakley FC Reserves will play host to the winners of an all, Premier Division tie between Lawford lads FC and Sudbury Sports FC.
Now, let’s turn to my “Star Player, as it was a Cup tie, I’m going to nominate one player from each team, Frinton and Walton FC look a decent footballing outfit, full of young promise and talent, collectively they played as a team, if one player stood out it was centre-forward, George Giltinane. For Little Oakley FC Reserves again a team effort from another youthful set of players but their engine room is run by Calum Green, full of running, always near the action, scoring a penalty and for the second time this season he gets my vote.

MATCH NOTIFICATIONS
Fixture Secretaries of Clubs are required to notify all match details, date, venue, kick-off time, colours etc, to their opposition and any appointed official/s, at least FIVE days before the match.

December & January: 14:00pm

CUP TIES
There will be NO requirement for “Extra-Time” to be played in Cup Matches, if scores are level at the end of “normal time” the match will proceed directly to penalty kicks.
SUBSTITUTES
The ESBFL continues to allow FIVE SUBSTITUTES to be named before kick-off but only “THREE SUBSTITUTES” may be allowed to participate.
Note:
In Essex County Cups (Premier & Junior) the Rule allows FIVE SUBSTITUTES to be named and those FIVE SUBSTITUTUES may be used on a “Roll-On / Roll-Off” basis.
TEAM SHEETS
Team Sheets should be shown or sent to the Referee and the Opposition team either by text, email etc
The BLUE “League Copy” of the Team Sheet should be sent by First Class Post to reach Mick Willmore by the Thursday after a Saturday match, this is the ONLY item of correspondence that is required by post.
RESULTS REPORTING
Rule 21(B)
BOTH Clubs shall notify/SMS the result of each Competition Match to the Competition within 30 minutes of the finish of the match. This will include Football Association and County Football Association matches. The results of all League and Cup matches in the Competition should be reported by the FA Full-Time “SMS” (text) System. Failure to comply with this Rule will result in a fine in accordance with the Fines Tariff.
FA FULL-TIME
The Referees marks, team, players, substitutes, goal scorers, red / yellow cards, and sin-bin, etc MUST be entered to FA Full-Time by the end of the Tuesday following a Saturday match (ie 48 hours after any match). Failure to complete FAFT correctly and on time WILL incur a League Fine/s.
DISCIPLINE
Since the start of the season there have been 45+ players dismissed and over 600 cautions, there have also been several incidences of misconduct towards players, Match officials, members of the public and county officials. These are situations the ESBFL Management feel very strongly about, and the statistics make poor reading, the ECFA will deal with all these cases as deemed appropriate but bear in mind these actions can be very costly both for players and your, Clubs.
WHOLE GAME SYSTEM (“WGS”)
All Club Secretaries should check “WGS” on a regular basis, if you don’t, the ECFA levy a fine (25%) for late acknowledgements and payments of fines and the Club could be put into a “SINE-DIE” situation meaning they cannot play until those debts are cleared.
Club Secretaries are also responsible for adding the matches missed by players who have been suspended.
Whilst the ESBFL regularly reviews the whole Club contents on “WGS” it is not their responsibility to monitor failures by Member Clubs to follow basic procedure/s.
REFRESHMENTS
Rule 20A
Refreshments for BOTH teams and Match Officials MUST be provided by the home Club at half time unless these are declined before the game. Clubs in default shall be fined.
