25/09/2021 – REPORT – Cavendish FC versus Silver End FC

ESSEX & SUFFOLK BORDER FOOTBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION ONE

CAVENDISH FC:             0.                 SILVER END FC:   3.

Date:               Saturday 25^th September 2021.

Venue:             Cavendish Sports Ground, Melford Road, Cavendish.

            With the Essex Junior Cup holding sway on fixtures involving ESBFL Clubs outside the Premier Division, there was just one match in Division One, ninth placed Cavendish FC against sixth placed Silver End FC and I last visited the home club back in March 2020 on what was the last fixture for that 2019 / 2020 season. It was good to catch up with young Spencer Hume, ESBFL Social Media, who like me watches games every week, he films the game and posts to “You-Tube” whilst I do the written reports!

            On a bright afternoon, probably not as hot as was forecast and on an excellent looking pitch the teams were ready for match official, Rob Giles, another referee I had not met before, to commence play.

            Cavendish FC kicked off, Hubbard sent the ball long for Taylor to chase and the same combination set up a cross which went out of play before King set up Taylor, but his left footed shot drifted wide, a good start from the home team. Silver End FC gradually found and kept possession as Cavendish FC gave the ball away too easily and Doyle had to get back to defend when Borein got forward from wing back and won the goal kick! Hubbard fouled Hollocks (T) for the first free-kick of this open match, Hewitt took the free-kick but placed he ball over the cross-bar but his corners and free-kicks would cause problems through-out this match. On ten minutes Rammell was adjudged to have fouled Durey but the free-kick taken by King flew straight to keeper, Chaplin (S) standing on his goal-line, interesting choice of free-kick given the apparent lack of height in the home team! Hollocks (T) ran forward on a mazy dribble and sent in a left footed shot to keeper, Hastie, Hollocks (T) then inter-played with Hodgson who was topped by a combined challenge from Wood and Tatum, one blocked the other cleared up field.

            Wood was adjudged to have climbed over Borein to concede a free-kick, Wood wasn’t happy as he felt his opponent was backing in, and he was spoken too by the on-the-spot referee, then Hollocks (S) ran through using his pace but his effort at goal left much to be desired as keeper, Hastie made a smart save. The balance of play had shifted from early home dominance to a neutral situation through midfield, Doyle and Bolton set up Taylor but good defending from Churchman stopped that attack. Another long ball forward out of defence saw Doyle chase and reach the ball before crossing to Hubbard whose return cross cleared keeper, Chaplin who was indebted to a fine goal-line clearance from Churchman, this for a corner. Hubbard took this corner and King headed just over the cross-bar and play moved quickly to the other end, a risky back-pass from Bolton towards his keeper, Hastie, who was fortunate to be able to clear the ball out of play, unfortunately Bolton was forced off the pitch to be replaced on twenty-five minutes by Finch. The first goal followed soon after, a fierce shot across the goal from Hollocks (S) was saved by keeper, Hastie, in fact a decent save, but the loose ball was turned into the net by JOE BOREIN who had started the move deep in his own half and before play could resume, home player Mills was spoken too by the referee, not sure why but it was clear any further dissent would mean ten minutes off the pitch.

            Buoyed by this goal, Silver End pushed forward for a second, Tatum fouled Hollocks (T) on the edge of the “D”, Cavendish FC lined up a four-man defensive wall, but JOE RAMMELL struck his free-kick low, into that wall with the ball squeezing through and entering the net, own goal, no way, Rammell was definitely claiming it. Cavendish FC were now two goals adrift, this after a bright start but the visitors had grown into this match and defensively looked solid with Hewitt marshalling his defence to good effect. Churchman fouled Durey, Taylor took the free-kick but low and straight to keeper, Chaplin (S) and when the ball was cleared up-field, his opposite number at the other end, Hastie, saved at the feet of Gauge who had eluded two tackles before running along the goal-line with the keeper saving at the near post. Boyd, for Silver End showed a good turn of pace with the ball at his feet and after beating three retreating defenders his shot was fielded by keeper, Hastie, then Hollocks (T) ran from the half-way line, again eluding tackles but the end result was a tame effort that keeper, Hastie clutched on the six-yard line. Cavendish FC through Taylor and Finch worked the ball into space behind the visitor’s defence but a heavy touch by Taylor allowed keeper, Chaplin (S) an easy pick-up on the edge of the penalty area and play broke down, the last chance of the half was started by Borein who sent Boyd away, but he scuffed his shot straight to keeper, Hastie.

HALF-TIME:    0 – 2.

            Silver End FC made a player change at half-time replacing Churchman with Vidler, and they re-started this match, Gauge rode tackles from Wood and Tatum to gain a corner, Hewitt took the kick which just eluded Hollocks (S) at the far post, another corner followed, taken by Boyd with Hewitt placing his towering header just wide. When Taylor for Cavendish FC received the ball thirty-five yards out, he tried his luck as he had seen keeper, Chaplin (S) well off his line, speculative perhaps but something was needed to be given for the home team to get back in this match, a third goal conceded would be disastrous! A throw-in from Binfield fell to Hubbard who also tries a speculative volley that flew straight to keeper, Chaplin (S), and when play stopped Cavendish replaced Doyle with Chaplin (W). A free-kick taken by King was headed clear by Hewitt who always made the difficult tasks look easy, experience and good positioning being the watch-word here! When Vidler burst into the penalty area he fell to ground from a tackle by Tatum, seen those given, but the referee had a good view and play continued but the burning question amongst the home supporters, and they were well supported, was how and when were they going to score! Hollocks (S) was spoken to by the referee having questioned the call for that penalty but as play continued Hewitt sent the ball long to Hollocks (S) who again found keeper, Hastie, well placed to save.

            On fifty-eight minutes Cavendish replaced King with Martin, Hollocks (T) robbed the ball off Tatum and Wood produced a fine tackle at the expense of a corner, which was defended well, and Cavendish FC pushed forward, Tatum found Martin who slipped the ball to Taylor who was thwarted by keeper, Chaplin (S) who had advanced quickly off his goal-line. Just after the hour mark, sixty-four minutes to be precise and Silver End FC put the game to bed scoring their third goal, the home defence shouted for off-side, the flag was raised, somewhat late, the defence stopped but TODD HOLLOCKS took advantage of that indecision in that home defence to score from close range, play to the whistle, I seem to remember being the order of the day. Undeterred, Cavendish FC went down the other end, Taylor and Durey linked up with Taylor forcing keeper, Chaplin (S) to tip the ball over the cross-bar, Taylor took the resulting corner, keeper, Chaplin (S) advanced, called and only just got any purchase on his punched clearance and his defence cleared. Finch became another player spoken too and Gauge ran through only for keeper, Hastie to make a great save from Vidler and the visitors settled down for the last fifteen minutes, three goals to the good and basically in control.

            Taylor, Durey and Martin, all had shots charged down by the Silver End FC defence, great defending in front of their keeper who had seen more action this half, Taylor tried another desperate long-range effort, new ball please, Durey ran at Hewitt, found some space and forced keeper, Chaplin (S) to save. Silver End replaced Gauge with James for the last fifteen minutes, Taylor ran through one-on-one with keeper, Chaplin (S) who stood his ground, the ball hit his head to be cleared, and Chaplin (W) sent over a fine cross that keeper, Chaplin (S) had to finger-tip over the cross-bar. As the minutes ticked away Finch had a glorious chance but again excellent goalkeeping from Chaplin (S) who saved low down to his right side. Both goalkeepers had made excellent saves throughout this second half and the best was saved till last, Cavendish keeper, Hastie diving full length to deny Hollocks (S) from a smart pass from his brother Hollocks (T), the corner came to nothing and the final whistle was blown.

FULL TIME:     0 – 3.

            An enjoyable game, for some, if you supported Silver End FC, the home crowd know their team’s capabilities but today the better organised team won this match, no bad tackles, no moments of controversy, a couple of players spoken too but the warnings from the match official were sufficient to ensure no yellow cards, well done and good luck to both teams for the rest of the season, with this victory Silver End FC move up to fourth in the table.

            For my weekly “Star Player”, for Cavendish FC, keeper, Hastie, beaten three times but made numerous saves throughout the game, Tatum and Wood battled away against a decent visiting forward line, Mills, Taylor, Hubbard and Durey worked hard but King stood out for the home side in midfield. Turning to Silver End FC, a big team effort, keeper, Chaplin (S) also made decent saves, especially in the second half, Borein, an attacking wing-back was a first half threat and scored the opening goal. Hewitt commanded the defensive line, nothing flash, just good positioning making the game look easy, Rammell was perhaps an unlikely scorer from a free-kick, he played well though. Gauge through the middle is a handful as are brothers Sam and Todd Hollocks, the later scored but for me a player who ran his heart out all game was Boyd and in talking to a home supporter he was picked out as the player who had taken his eye, citing his tremendous work rate at both ends of the pitch.

MATCH NOTIFICATIONS

Clubs are required to notify all match details, date venue, kick-off time, colours etc, to their opposition and any appointed official/s, FIVE days before the match.

TEAM SHEETS

Team Sheets should be shown or sent to the Referee and the Opposition team either by text, email etc

The BLUE “League Copy” of the Team Sheet should be sent by First Class Post to reach Mick Willmore by the Thursday after a Saturday match, this is the ONLY item of correspondence that is required by post.

FA FULL-TIME

The Referees marks, team, players, substitutes, goal scorers, red / yellow cards, and sin-bin, etc MUST be entered to FA Full-Time by the end of the Tuesday following a Saturday match (ie 48 hours after any match). Failure to complete FAFT correctly and on time WILL incur a League Fine/s.

DISCIPLINE

Since the start of the season there have been 30 players dismissed and over 400 cautions, there have also been several incidences of misconduct towards players, Match officials, members of the public and county officials. These are situations the ESBFL Management feel very strongly about, and the statistics make poor reading, the ECFA will deal with all these cases as deemed appropriate but bear in mind these actions can be very costly both for players and your, Clubs.
