Date:   Saturday 27^th August 2016.                            Venue: Florence Park, Tiptree.

 

After covering four Premier Division games in the first two weeks of the season I thought that a change of Division was the order of the day, Wormingford Wanderers FC who were Division One Champions last season were visiting Tiptree Jobserve FC who gained promotion from Division Two. Personally, I believe that this Division will be a keenly contested Division with “Main Club” teams rather than “Member Club Reserve” teams will be challenging for honours this season and early indications and results bear this out so far, however, there is a long way to go.

 

On a bright but very windy afternoon the match official for this Division game was Andrew Harvey who would be assisted by Club Linesmen. The pitch used at Florence Park has clearly had some, perhaps, overdue care and attention and looked in pristine condition with only the odd divot that masked the sprinkler system. The home team now benefit from a new club sponsor as do Wormingford, a god-send to any club in this day and age let’s hope this trend continues at other clubs who could do with a cash injection!

 

Tiptree kicked off, but the first chance fell to Whybrow (Lu) who scooped the ball over the cross-bar when Wiggett totally missed his attempted clearance from a pass by Poole, back playing at a former club after several seasons with Holland FC. Wormingford pushed forward again with the strong wind almost at their backs but Tiptree looked assured on the ball and Harvey sent Williamson (B) away only for the forward to hit the ball high and wide, are these new balls so light or do players like to score the spectacular rather than take the simple chance! Poole was seeing plenty of the ball down the right wing and having rode a couple of challenges his low cross almost deceived keeper, Aherne  when in reared up in front of him, hitting his chest but bouncing to safety. A corner from Dobson (R) almost found the head of Close but Clark cleared almost off the visitors head and Poole was crudely fouled by Clover at the expense of a free-kick which Dobson (L) drove into the side netting. On ten minutes, Williamson (B) made ground down the right wing, sending in a low cross which Whybrow (B) cleared forward to Poole who crossed to Whybrow (Lu) but player-manager Wiggett recovered to clear at the expense of a throw-in.

As the end-to-end play continued Williamson (S) fired over from a cross from Trim, Curtis handled when lying prostrate on the ground when Harvey threatened, with the free-kick taken by Barham cleared by Dobson (L). Tiptree were having a good spell of possession and when Clover sent Cameron away his cross was met once again by Williamson (B) but his shot failed to trouble keeper, Lynn. Another penetrating run by Harvey led to another cross which keeper Lynn saved just in front of Williamson (B), who continued his crusade when dispossessing Dobson (L) before turning back towards goal and forcing Lynn to make another crucial save. Dobson (R) and Poole had switched wings with Dobson immediately winning a corner off of Clover but Clark cleared with a strong header and in the chase for the loose ball Charlton handled the ball near the halfway line. Barham took the free-kick finding Williamson (B) with Lynn forced to parry a close range header then Wiggett latched onto the loose ball to force Lynn to deflect the ball onto the cross-bar for probably the best goal-scoring chances of the match so far.

On twenty-one minutes a poor goal-kick from Lynn put Pringle in trouble with the defender, losing the miss-hit ball to DEAN HARVEY who ran forward to glide the ball past to advancing Lynn for the opening goal. Tiptree continued their push for a second goal and Williamson (B) used both feet to get past Curtis but only managed to lob the ball wide whereas Poole for Wormingford looked dangerous on the ball but Clark and Wiggett defended well aided by Clover and Trim. On thirty minutes Wiggett made a timely tackle on Poole but Wormingford worked a corner five minutes later with Poole playing the ball off Clover who had stuck to his defensive task. Poole took the kick himself with Whybrow (Lu) unable to capitalise, heading narrowly wide. Williamson ran through once again this time lifting the ball over the keeper and cross-bar and when play resumed a poor challenge by Harvey on Dobson (L) left the defender on the ground, needing treatment. From the restart Poole and Dobson (R) exchanged passes with keeper Aherne calling for, but failing to reach the whipped cross that was always going away from him under the assistance of the wind, Poole reacted quickest controlling the ball before turning and passing inside expecting a colleague to be running in however Wiggett cleared the danger. Dobson (L) was forced to cover when Harvey galloped away to reach a long pass as any failure to win the ball would have let in Williamson (B) standing free in the penalty area. Tiptree were finishing the half the stronger team with Williamson (B) leading the charge to send in a deep cross towards Harvey who would almost certainly have scored but for a timely clearance by the head of Martin just under the cross-bar. A teasing cross from Barham beat everyone with Harvey being hit in the face, not knowing where the ball was, but again a decent approach from the home team.

 

HALF-TIME:      1 – 0

 

Wormingford kicked-off the second half, they would have the advantage of the wind behind them but having this so-called advantage can be meaningless if you don’t control the ball and deliver that final crucial pass! Whybrow (Lu) and Dobson (R) did manage to work the ball into Poole but despite good control his shot at goal was too weak and Aherne saved with ease. Five minutes into the half and we witnessed a double dismissal, Harvey and Poole clashed over by the far corner flag, Harvey manhandled Poole to the ground after an initial incident but by raising their hands, another one of the ninety-six new rules, left the referee with little option to dismiss firstly Harvey and then Poole with the disconsolate players walking back to the changing rooms with their arms over each other’s shoulders! From the Wormingford free-kick, taken by Dobson, keeper Aherne flapped at the driven ball which was subsequently cleared. On fifty-one minutes, or a minute after the dismissals Tiptree increased their lead when Trim raced clear down the right wing finding Williamson (S) who played the ball into the penalty area where BEN WILLIAMSON stroked the ball home whilst standing at the near post and at this point the visitors substituted the injured Close with Brown (M).

Wormingford would have to improve their approach play considerably if they wanted to get even appoint from this game and the game continued at a decent pace despite both teams now having only ten players apiece. Aherne, the home keeper made two good saves from Whybrow (Lu) and Trim sliced another effort over his own cross-bar, this time from Dobson (R). At the other end a cross by Joyce who had dispossessed Pringle, should have seen Williamson (B) head home from close range but he narrowly missed the target. Dobson (L) was in the wars again when Williamson (B) put in a robust challenge, Dobson (L) complained and Williamson (B) got a just warning from the referee. A long clearance from Lynn fell to Whybrow (Lu) who controlled well before firing towards goal with Wiggett getting in the way to deflect the ball out for a corner. On sixty-eight minutes Tiptree scored again when a quick break left Wormingford exposed again defence, as Joyce broke away and when he played the ball inside the last defender there was BEN WILLIAMSON to take the ball in his stride and place a low shot past the advancing keeper.

Tiptree replaced Williamson (S) with Todd whilst Wormingford replaced Charlton with Fitzpatrick a Dobson (R) corner found the head of Dobson (L) but keeper Aherne punched clear from close range. Brown (L) fouled Todd which led to Lynn making a fine save from Clover who had run through from the half-way line to send a rising shot goalwards. Tiptree replaced Wiggett with Parfit and we reached the eightieth minute with both teams trying to create chances. A run and shot from Curtis forced Aherne into a fine save whilst at the other end Williamson (B) won a dual with Dobson (L) and forced Lynn into another fine save at full stretch. Defender Trim looked a decent wing-back when going forward and made a deep run into the Wormingford half until he was fouled by Brown (L) then Clark fouled Brown (M) just outside the penalty area. Aherne made a fine save from the resultant free-kick taken by Dobson (L) and Brown (L) pushed forward again to set up Brown (M) whose shot was just over the cross-bar. As the game moved towards its finish the visitors would rue the poor final ball, willing runners on the pitch and ability to match but unless that final ball is inch perfect the many more chances will go begging. On the other hand Tiptree also had committed players who wanted the ball, perhaps more so in this match and they deserved their victory.

 

FULL TIME:       3 – 0

 

Another decent game between two teams that on this evidence should be challenging for honours at the end of the season, Wormingford Wanderers looked below par and this was a second successive defeat whereas the home team had played and won handsomely against an under-strength University of Essex Reserve team two weeks ago. Ironically these two teams have been drawn to meet in the second round of the ESBFL Knock-Out Cup on a date to be advised.

 

My Man-of-the-Match choice was a relatively simple choice as with two goals and plenty of generally good attacking play was Ben Williamson of Tiptree Jobserve FC.
