29/12/2018 – REPORT – Rowhedge FC versus Tollesbury FC

Rowhedge v Tollesbury

Rowhedge welcomed Tollesbury to Rowhedge Recreation Ground for the last game in 2018 for both sides. The home side Rowhedge started the weekend in 10th while the visitors sat in 4th however a win would see them move into 2nd. Could Tollesbury end the year in a strong 2nd place finish?

The Home side got us underway and it was Tollesbury with the first effort on goal. A long ball up wasn’t cleared by Max Foley and Ash Collins got in behind. He brought the ball down and unleashed an effort at goal which went just past the post. On 6 minutes the away side Tollesbury broke the deadlock and went 1-0 up. Sam Rollo picked up the ball out-wide, he looked up and delivered a great ball into the box which was cleared but only as far as Jamie Bright who, on the edge of the box, volleyed a fantastic effort past goalkeeper Luke Payne and into the back of the net, a fantastic goal!

6 minutes later and the away side had doubled their lead. Scott Keeble with a ball over the top found the run of Tommy Gregory who got down the byline, squared the ball into the path of Ash Collins who came across and sliced his shot onto the crossbar, the ball feel kindly back to him as he volleyed back at goal, the ball was then well cleared off the line by Foley but the ball hit the leg off Will Butcher and deflected into the net.

Tommy Gregory continued to cause problems for the Rowhedge defence and once again he found himself in a load of space down the right hand side in where he found the run of Ash Collins at the back post but he could only head over the bar.
Rowhedge then had a great chance of their own when a Max Foley cross met the head of Siam Izycki but his header went just past the post. Fantastic chance.
Tollesbury continued to put on pressure and looked for a 3rd, coming close when Tommy Gregory had a free kick down the far left about 20 yards out. Gregory stepped up and drilled an effort at goal which hit off the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
On 35 minutes the away side had a third. Mitchell Wright with a long throw into the box found Ash Collins who poked it past Payne for Tollesbury’s 3rd!

3 quickly became 4 for Tollesbury. Wright played an outstanding diagonal ball to Tommy Gregory, Gregory controlled magnificently in the box, turned and fired a low effort into the bottom right corner. A fantastic goal!

With minutes remaining of the half Tollesbury almost had a 5th when Ashley Collins got in behind the defence but his effort at goal was well saved by Payne.

With the game as good as finished in the first half, the second half was set up to be fairly one sided. The away side got us underway for the second half and it was Tollesbury who had a great chance to get a 5th. Jamie Bright found the feet of Ash Collins who got the ball out his feet and fired at goal but once again Lodge was there to make a good save.
Sam Rollo then had a great effort from 25 yards smash the side netting. But on 61 minutes Tollesbury should have had a 6th. Will Butcher with a great ball over the top found the run of Ash Collins who timed his run brilliantly and he went through 1 on 1. Collins looked up and curled his effort around Lodge but the ball skimmed the bar and went out for a goal kick.
Will Butcher then had a free kick on the edge of the box in which he curled around the ball brilliantly but Lodge was there to make a outstanding save to deny Tollesbury a 5th.
From the resulting corner Tollesbury had their 5th, when a scramble in the box fell kindly to Will Butcher who on the half volley fired home into the top left corner.

2 minutes later and Ash Collins almost had Tollesbury a 6th, Scott Keeble with a great ball over the top straight to Ash Collins who went through on goal before trying to chip the keeper but Lodge stood strong and caught the ball.
5 minutes later and Tollesbury had a 6th. Collins found himself once again through on goal from a Gregory ball, Collins opened himself up and slotted past Lodge and into the bottom right corner.

With 7 minutes left Tollesbury grabbed their 7th. Tommy Gregory with another brilliant ball into the box found the head of John Hill whose header somehow found the back of the net.

Sam Rollo then had a volley from 30 yards caught by Lodge but Tollesbury comfortably fought out a great afternoon.

A day to forget for Rowhedge who were beaten by a strong Tollesbury side. Rowhedge were poor in the final third but still have time to improve and with a lot of youngsters in the squad, their future looks bright. Another good result for Tollesbury who continue their great season. All the best.
