Forty-Four of the scheduled matches were played last Saturday, probably the highest number ever in the merged ESBFL, although there was another postponement for a lack of players, perhaps a worrying time so early in the season!
In Division Four South, there were first victories of the new season for Beacon Hill Rovers Reserves, Broomfield “A”, Southminster United Reserves, Witham Town “A” and South Cestos.
Division Four North had six matches, three were high scoring, West Bergholt Reserves hit eight (three for Taylor) to the one of Tiptree Jobserve Reserves., Tendring Borough scored six to the three in reply from Tollesbury and Elmstead Market Reserves went nap against Brooklands. Essex Students have started well in Division Three North, this week beating Wivenhoe United, likewise White Notley Reserves who won at Bradfield Rovers Reserves, Boxted Lodgers beat Silver End United Reserves and Wormingford Wanderers drew with Roman Rovers Reserves. The final two games played at the same venue, both had an early kick-off, these saw Mersea Island open their season with a six-nil drubbing of new team, Colchester Rangers who have yet to fine the net, and where Oyster scored eight against Prettygate Reserves who scored three in reply.
There were seven matches in Division Two, where only one team failed to score, some teams in this division have already played six games, West Bergholt prevailed again with their sixth straight win, Colchester Tekkers sit close behind after beating Alresford Colne Rangers Reserves. Stillwaters beat Harwich & Parkeston “A” by the odd goal in a nine-goal thriller, Frinton & Walton beat Springfield U23’s, Mayland Village beat Tiptree Jobserve, Emerson & Upminster narrowly beat Lawford Lads and finally Cressing United Reserves and Sudbury Sports Reserves both got their first points when they drew when playing each other.
Silver End United, one of only two teams who remain unbeaten, beat Prettygate to sit top of Division One, the other team is Springfield Reserves who beat Bradfield Rovers. In another eight-goal game, Cavendish beat Roman Rovers, Tavern beat Gas Recreation Reserves, Great Bentley beat struggling Dovercourt Rovers and the final game, Wivenhoe Town Reserves against Birchanger Athletic, was a draw.
Eight matches were played in the Premier Division, plenty of goals in there as well, The Rodings & Waltham hit five against Earls Colne, who, after five straight wins have lost the last three, Sudbury Sports scored four to edge out Springfield by the odd goal, Stanway Rovers Reserves also scored four away against Gosfield United. Dedham Old Boys scored three and won for the second week in a row, this over Tiptree Heath the team just above them at the bottom. Hatfield Peverel remain at the top, Thorpe Athletic stay second, Sudbury Sports are third and Great Bentley sit fourth, these four all won at home, finally in a local derby, White Notley and Cressing United drew at one goal apiece.
