Harwich & Parkeston FC Reserves v Cavendish FC
Gavin Hewitt’s Harwich & Parkeston Reserves welcomed new border league side Cavendish to the Royal Oak on this windy Saturday afternoon. Cavendish in their first season in the ESBFL have been doing well, 8th in division Two, while their opponents are 10th in division three. The winner of this tie will play AFC Sudbury ‘A’ in the semi-finals away from home.
The away side got us underway and within a minute had a great chance, Chris Brewster with a brilliant knock on from a throw met the run off Dan Ashdown who first time fired at goal but he’s effort went wide. 3 minutes later and Harwich should have been ahead, a brilliant flick on by Harry Harvey saw Ross Purll pounce and go through on goal one on one, Rob Thorne came rushing off his line and closed down the angle and brilliantly saved Ross Purll effort.
The ‘Dishmen’ then had a good chance from a free kick on the edge of the box, James Wyatt stepped up and fired over the bar.
On 9 minutes the deadlock was broken and it was the away side who had taken the lead, Dan Ashdown with a great ball down the line to Will Chaplin, Chaplin then looked up and picked out Wyatt on the edge of the box who on the half volley fired at goal and luckily for Cavendish hit a bobble and went over the diving Quinn Bird, an unfortunate goal to concede for Harwich.

Two minutes later and H&P almost levelled, Harry Harvey with a great tackle in the middle saw Ross Purll pick it up and beat his man go through on goal, once again Rob Thorne closed down the angle and Ross Purll fired just past the post.
3 minutes later and Cavendish had a 2nd, Nicky Palmer with the ball at the back, was then what looked like he was fouled from the back by Chaplin but the Referee gave nothing, the loose ball was with Brewster who was through on goal and Brewster fired past the keeper to grab Cavendish a 2nd, from my view I thought that was a foul and so did the Harwich fans!

6 minutes later and Harwich had a deserved goal back, a long ball by Nicky Palmer met the run off Elliot Fay down the far right hand side, Fay looked up and delivered a low ball into the box which was spilled by Thorne and Ross Purll had an empty net to fire home into, H&P back into the game!

With Harwich back in the game the young shrimpers had a lot of confidence back and almost levelled, Harry Harvey once again winning everything in the midfield played ball too Kieran Watkinson who turned excellently and beat both his men, drove to the edge of the box and fired a great effort at goal which just went past the post.
Approaching the 35th minute and H&P were playing some good football and almost levelled when a Nicky Palmer long ball meant the feet off Kieran Watkinson inside the box who brilliantly 1st time laid off a ball to Ross Purll who took the ball past his man and saw Thorne off his line and from the edge of the box brilliantly chipped him but he’s effort hit the bar.
With 2 minutes remaining Cavendish had a 3rd and it was another really horrible goal to concede for Harwich, Will Chaplin with an excellent ball into the box from the corner was missed by everyone and unexpectedly hit Harvey’s foot and went into the back of the net.

Cavendish then almost had a 4th, Chris Brewster with some good play played through James Wyatt who went through but Quinn Bird made an excellent diving save to keep the scoring at 1-3.

The hosts got us underway for the second half but it was Cavendish who started the brighter, Chaplin had an effort from the edge of the box which went wide, but Cavendish had a great chance to wrap up this game minutes into the second half when Brewster received the ball in the box, beat his man and fired at goal but Alex Eadie blocked well.
7 minutes into the second half and Cavendish had a 4th and it was deserved after the way they started the second half, Will Chaplin with a ball down the line to Wyatt, who beat his man cleverly and got to the bye-line where he looked up and crossed the ball to Chris Brewster who’s header looped over Bird and into the bottom left corner!

With 25 minutes remaining, H&P almost had a goal back when an Elliot Fay corner wasn’t cleared properly, and the ball fell to Ross Purll who fired at goal, his effort was blocked and the ball fell to the Harry Harvey at the back post who fired just past the post.
Harwich continued to look for a goal back and came even closer when Ross Purll got in behind, got to the bye-line and crossed the ball across the goal to Elliot Fay who at the back post fired at goal but hit the side netting.
Oliver King then came close from a Chaplin corner when his header went just wide.
Chris Brewster for Cavendish got through on goal when he intercepted Nicky Palmer and went through on goal and fired at goal but Bird saved well.
With minutes remaining Harwich looked for a consolation and came close when Harry Harvey volleyed at goal but he’s effort went wide.

Cavendish progress to the semi-finals of the Tommy Thompson Cup where they will face AFC Sudbury ‘A’ away from home. Overall Harwich were the better side first half but Cavendish started the second half better and got the 4th goal which killed the game. Missed chances cost Harwich.
Harwich have some good young talent coming through and with experience they will become very good players.
