Essex and Suffolk Border League Knock Out Cup Quarter Final

AFC Sudbury A v Hedinghams United

Craig Power and Jamie Souza AFC Sudbury “A” welcomed Shaun Clifford’s Hedinghams United to the king marsh stadium on this Friday night in the Quarter finals of the ESBL Knock Out Cup. Division Two side Sudbury v Premier Division side Hedingham. Could the young Yellows cause an upset and progress to the semi finals?

A decent sized crowd was in attendance for the game as well

The away side got us underway at the King Marsh Stadium. The first chance occurred on the 6th minute and it was young Sudbury side who threatened first, Ellis Girling with a ball into the box found Freddie King who from 6 yards out got past his man and got a shot off but Jordan Crisell got down well to make the save.
Sudbury started the quicker and almost went 1-0 up when Jack Renwick made his way into the box beating 2 men, and getting a shot off which forced a strong hand from Crisell to keep the scoring at 0-0.
Sudbury continued to search for an opening and once again came close when an excellent ball through the middle by Sam Girling found the run off Jack Renwick who made his way into the box and fired at goal but he’s effort went into the side netting.
On the 23rd minute Hedinghams almost took the lead when Oliver Clifford found Jamie Weston on the overlap, Weston made his way into the box, looked up and calmly placed his shot past Wright and into the bottom corner but Sudbury Captain Lewis O’Malley flew himself at the ball to block it off the line to keep the score at 0-0, a fantastic block.
Sudbury then had a free kick 25 yards out, Sam Girling stepped up and curled his shot around the wall but once again Jordan Crisell was there to make a good save.
With half time approaching Sudbury took the lead, Jack Renwick with a ball to Ethan Mayhew who turned, looked up and found Freddie King, King turned and laid off a ball to Renwick who first time played a ball back to King, King looked up and played a great ball out-wide to Harry Critchley who first timed fizzed in a ball back post and Ellis Girling unmarked tapped home to grab Sudbury the lead just before half time!

The second half got underway with Sudbury kicking us off and it was the Yellows who had the first chance, Ethan Mayhew and Freddie King linking up really well ended with Mayhew through on goal but he’s effort was comfortable for Jordan Crisell.
Ethan Mayhew once again was causing problems for United and Mayhew had an effort from 25 yards which just went over the Bar.
Sudbury once again starting the half the stronger and had a great opportunity to double their lead from a free kick on the edge of the box, Sam Girling stepped up and fired at goal but fired straight into the hands of Jordan Crisell.
Hedinghams then went up the other end and almost equalised when Robert Constontin got in behind and fired at goal but that was straight into the hands of Wright.
On the 66th minute Hedingham equalised when a ball over the top caught out the Sudbury defence and left Daniel Miller onside, Miller looked up and played a ball across the box and a Sudbury defender stuck his leg out and the ball deflected of the Sudbury defender and into the bottom right corner!

Hedinghams looked to grab another straight away and came very close when Oliver Clifford met onto a Miller cross but Clifford’s effort went wide.
Minutes later and Hedinghams almost went ahead, a quick one two on the edge of the box between Conotontin and Alex Gilca saw Gilca fire a fantastic effort on the edge of the box which it’s heading into the top corner but Sam Wright pulled off a magnificent save to keep the score level.
Sudbury looked for a 2nd and came close when Sam Girling had a shot from the edge of the box which was well saved by Crisell.
Sudbury then had another free kick 8 minutes from time, this one 20 yards out, Joe Osborn stepped up and curled it around the wall but once again Jordan Crisell dived well to make another brilliant save.
Into added time, the 91st minute and Sudbury had another free kick Joe Osborn delivered into the box, Hedingham cleared only as far as the edge of the box where Girling flicked it back in and Ethan Mayhew beat the offside trap and tapped home past Crisell to give Sudbury the lead.

With all the stoppages the referee added on an extra 5 minutes but the young Yellows held on to secure a semi final spot!

An excellent cup tie, some good football on display. A really good advert for the border league and for the cup. Sudbury will play the winner from Cressing v Lawford. Sudbury were very good, played some excellent football but Hedingham made it very hard for them and defended really well.
