Alresford Colne Rangers FC Reserves (ACR) v Cressing United FC

Lee Purchase’s Alresford welcomed Ivan Goodey’s Cressing United to Ford Lane in today’s big game. The hosts came into this sitting in 1st place and a win would see them go 13 points clear. The visitors Cressing were looking to move up to 4th and go joint on points with 2nd.

The away side got the game underway at Ford Lane but it was the hosts who had the first opportunity on goal. A long ball over the top found the run of Kye Tuckwell who ran into the box before cutting a ball back to the edge of the box which found Russell McLean who, on the edge of the box, fired first time at goal and forced a block off the line by the Cressing Utd defender.
Cressing then had a great chance of their own. Mike Storey from a corner put the ball into the box which met the volley of Daniel Hume but his effort went over the bar.
With a very poor first half, ten minutes from its end and not many chances to talk about, ACR almost went into the break 1-0 up. McLean picked the ball up in the midfield, looked up and played a ball out wide to Andrew Merchant who first-time delivered a great ball into the box which missed everyone and went past goalkeeper Graham Smith and came off the post and back into play.
Alresford continued to look for an opener and came close when a clever flick by Roger Smith bounced in front of Luke Harrison, Harrison then attempted an overhead kick but flew safely into the hands of Smith. And with that the referee Steven Tymms blew to mark the end of the first half.

The second half got underway with the hosts kicking us off and it was them that were the side who started the stronger. Steven Davis delivered a ball into the box which met the head of Smith at the back post who headed wide of the goal. Cressing Utd looked to try and snatch a goal on the counter and came close when Hume was tackled by Chris Price, the ball kindly fell to Luke Thorndyke who on the edge of the box fired an effort at goal but was too comfortable for Peter Spencer in the ACR goal.
Cressing continued to have a really strong spell and came close once again when Thorndyke played a great ball out wide to Hume. Hume got down the bye-line and crossed in a ball which was failed to be cleared. Storey latched onto it and laid it off to Thorndyke who first-time fired at goal, but Price blocked well.
On 64 minutes Alresford were awarded a penalty. Smith picked up on a loose ball, fired at goal but the ball was blocked by the hands of James King. Penalty to Alresford!
Tuckwell stepped up and calmly slotted home bottom left to give Alresford a very big goal.

Cressing looked to respond straight away from the goal and came very close when Sam White took a quick free-kick which met the head of Levi Gray but his header went safely into the hands of Spencer.
Smith kept causing problems for Cressing and he almost assisted Tuckwell for his 2nd. Smith got into the box and poked a great ball towards Tuckwell, as Tuckwell went to hit the ball it bounced off a horrible bobble and his shot went blazing over the bar.
Cressing then went close once again when King latched onto a loose ball but his effort went wide of the goal.
Deep into stoppage time the visitors scored an equalising goal. Gray with a long throw into the box was flicked on by Hume, then flicked on again by Storey, sliced into the air by Chris Collins and then headed towards goal by ACR defender Aaron Lee which had keeper Spencer scrambling to stop it from crossing the line, but he only ended up in the back of the net with the ball!

And with that the referee blew up for full time.

A very good point for Ivan Goodey’s Cressing United who come away from Ford Lane with a hard fought point. Alresford will be disappointed, especially with many missed chances which proved to be vital.
