Essex & Suffolk Border League Round –Up 5th September 2020.
Saturday saw the return to football for the Essex & Suffolk Border Football League with a record number of teams participating. The league welcomes all newcomers to the competition and wish them every success.
In the Premier Division, newcomers Colne Athletic FC enjoyed a fine win, whilst the two other sides promoted to the top division Sudbury Sports FC and Felixstowe & Walton United FC Reserves were defeated.
Previous League Champions, Gas Recreation FC beat Flitch United FC 4-0 to head the fledgling table with two goals from Shane Goodyear and one a piece for Kyle Bergin and Aston Firkins.
White Notley FC travelled to Sudbury Sports FC and inflicted a fine 3-1 defeat on the Academy side.
It was also a good win for Colne Athletic FC at the Brantham Leisure Centre against Brantham Athletic FC Reserves. The 2-1 win ensures a great start to senior football for Colne, but Brantham will be looking for an improvement this season as the intervention of COVID-19 saved them from relegation following the cancellation of the 2019/20 season.
There was a creditable start to Dedham Old Boys FC campaign beating Felixstowe & Walton United FC Reserves 2-0 following their switch from the Thurlow Nunn Football League. With their first team in the Ryman league much will be expected from the Seasiders. The dependable John Vitelli scored the goals for the Old Boys.
Alresford Colne Rangers FC made their usual confident start winning a five-goal thriller at Tiptree Heath FC 3-2 whilst Earls Colne FC had a fine 2-1 win up the A12 at Hatfield Peverel FC by 2-1. On target for them were Harry Salter and Benrico Stripe.
Four goals were shared at the Lorkin Daniel Field where West Bergholt FC were held by last season’s surprise packet Great Bentley FC who had it not been for a truncated season would very likely have been crowned champions.
At School Lane Lawford Lads FC were held by Little Oakley FC Reserves in a 1-1 draw. Macauley Watson was on target for the ‘Lads’ whilst Miles Sargent struck the reply.
In Division One there are great expectations from newcomers Dunmow Town FC, but they suffered a surprise defeat by Stanway Pegasus FC Reserves by 3-2.
No such problems for Silver End United FC returning to the Border league after many years’ absence. They beat Stanway Rovers Community Reserves 4-2 to get there season underway.
FC Clacton Reserves will be seeking a promotion place this time and made the perfect start with a 6-1 trouncing at Hedinghams United FC. They were well served with goals from Jake Adams, Thomas Ayton, Cameron Dolphin, Quinn Taylor and a goal a piece from substitutes Terrance Kangandu and Lewis King. Ashley Taylor scored the consolation goal for the home side.
Meanwhile Belle View Social FC accounted for visiting Holland ‘A’ 4-2 with a brace from Josh Grimes and one each for Conor Howard and Jack Webb.
The Division’s biggest winners were that of Tiptree Jobserve FC who proved far too strong for Boxted Lodgers FC at Cage Lane by a margin of 9-1.
Alresford Colne Rangers FC Reserves overwhelmed Shrub End United at Ford Lane winning 6-1, but at the Pavilion, Cressing United FC were held by Coggeshall United FC Reserves in a goal less draw.
Mersea Island FC, not always the best of travellers, will be delighted with there 2-1 victory at Gosfield United FC through goals from Daniel Allston and Ethan Ward. Lewis Cacchio replied for United.
The pick of results in Division Two saw newcomers Brightlingsea Town FC defeated at home by Harwich & Parkeston FC Reserves 3-2 that saw Leslie Lewis, Harry Miller and Kieron Watkinson score for the visitors in at match played at Harwich.
