14/01/2023 – Weekly Round-Up

ESSEX & SUFFOLK BORDER FOOTBALL LEAGUE

WEEKLY ROUND-UP for 14/01/2023

Ten games fell to the wet weather but twenty-two league and five cup matches still went ahead.

Dunmow Town scored and missed penalties to narrowly beat Hatfield Peverel so retaining top spot, second placed Tiptree Heath could only manage a draw at Alresford Colne Rangers who had improved from the previous weeks drubbing. Colne Athletic shared the points with Belle Vue and West Bergholt climbed two places when getting three welcome points from their win over Dedham Old Boys.

With Division One leaders, Brightlingsea Town, inactive, Silver End and Stanway Pegasus Reserves kept in touch with home victories over Cressing and Holland Reserves respectively.

Dovercourt Rovers strolled on with another victory, this time against third placed Tiptree Jobserve Reserves who drop to sixth, Boxted Lodgers move into third spot after beating bottom team, Tollesbury.

Division Three is now headed by Bradfield Rovers, a team for so long struggling in the lower divisions, they beat Great Bradfords whilst Prettygate beat Gosfield United Reserves on their travels.

With leaders Roman Rovers and third placed Ramsey & Mistley inactive High Roding stay second in Division Four whilst Wormingford Wanderers Reserves move up to third courtesy of victories over Kelvedon Social Reserves and Tendring District respectively.

Division Five is still led by Gas Recreation Reserves, their two-one victory over second bottom Assington Stanley perhaps indicates that their opponents “had-a-go”. Second placed Boxford Rovers hit eleven against Mersea Island Reserves, four more for top scorer Egglestone who was overshadowed by McCracken who hit five!

In the Tommy Thomson Cup there were victories for, Sporting Rebels, Cavendish Reserves, and Gas Recreation (First), whilst Division Five Oyster beat Division Two, Hedinghams and Division Three, Great Bentley Reserves overcame Division Two, Tavern with the match going to penalties.
