Essex & Suffolk Border League Round – 17th / 21st August 2021.
There was a full mid week program in the Premier Division of the Essex & Suffolk Border League concluding with Saturday’s results that shows Stanway Pegasus leading the table with the only 100% record.
Indeed, the leaders have made an impressive start to the campaign and are two points clear of previous champions Gas Recreation. Josh Dillon scored both the goals that saw them overcome Brantham Athletic Reserves 2-0 and they followed up with a 4-2 home win against struggling Lawford Lads, who remain pointless at the foot of the table.
Lawford have had some tough fixtures and were well beaten on Tuesday at School Lane by ‘Gas’ who overwhelmed the home side taking a 5-0 interval lead and added a 6th in the second half. Harry Willoughby led the scoring with a hat trick with one each from Sam Bird, Charley Bird and Harry Hewes.
‘Gas’ followed up on Saturday with a comprehensive 3-1 win over visiting Dunmow Town who surprisingly are having an indifferent start to the season. Sam Bird, Eldon Craig and Scott Page did the damage. However, Dunmow did beat Sudbury Sports 4-1 on Tuesday evening, but are inconsistent whilst ‘Sports’ are struggling for momentum with one win from five. James Cowler Gianni Cricklow and Darius Ghinea hit the goals with Jamie Bennett replying for Sudbury.
Chelmsford City Reserves were rampant during the week winning both of there games and are handily placed in third. An emphatic 5-0 success at Tiptree Heath produced the first defeat for the home side as Niall Atwood, Luke Deslandes, Adam Morgan, Evan Payne and Reggie Gregory struck the goals.
However, Friday night Earls Colne put up a good fight, but nevertheless were beaten 3-1 at Melbourne Park where the City marksmen were Abraham Eze, Alfie Gilbey and Reggie Gregory netting his 5th of the season.
Alresford Colne Rangers, who occupy fourth place, remain unbeaten after five games. They took a point at Dedham Old Boys in a 1-1 draw through Westley West with Luke Oscar replying. On Saturday they were involved in a seven goal thriller at Hatfield Peverel, but claimed the points winning 4-3 with goals from Jack Johnson, Kieran Radford and a brace from Ryan Lewis.
West Bergholt who are now in a winning sequence of three matches are in fifth place following a mid week success at home against Colne Athletic where the premier top scorer Karl Andrade’s lone strike proved enough and Saturday hit four at Barnston without reply to ensure a successful week. It was another for Karl Andrade, his seventh of the season, with Jake Bethell (OG), Lewis Blanchett and Lee Townrow completing the scoring.
Colne Athletic made amends on Saturday defeating Dedham Old Boys at the Duchy Field 2-1, whilst Felixstowe & Walton U23s recorded there first success with a mid week win at Little Oakley Reserves. Christopher Warren and Benjamin Pratt were on target together with a brace from Mike Powell. However, they were beaten at White Notley Saturday losing 3-2, there scorers being Daniel Horton and Rory Porter.
In the First Division leaders Stanway Rovers U23s were held at home by Cressing United. A couple from Harry Thomas set the pacemakers up, but the visitors thwarted a third successive win for the home side with goals from Robert Rusu and Harry Ashdown.
FC Clacton Reserves made the long trek to Felsted Athletic where the home side prevailed 2-0 with goals from William Hamill and Kieran Heap. Gosfield United gained there first victory beating Alresford Colne Rangers Reserves 5-2 where Jake Gilder hit twice with additional goals from Lewis Clifford and Bobby Pike.
Elsewhere there was a first win for Mersea Island over Tiptree Jobserve and success also for Coggeshall United Reserves, Bell Vue Social and Harwich & Parkeston.
